Introduction to literature genres; phonetic approach to reading spelling and vocabulary development; formal writing skills; book reports, research projects and creative writing activities.

Study of anthologies and trade books, including biographies and historical fiction and shared discussion through literature circle; formal writing and research projects; vocabulary development through analogies and reading; continued phonetic instruction through spelling.

Literature integrated with social studies themes; writing skills; including editing and revision emphasized; book reports, research projects, subject oriented journals provide writing practice across the curriculum; vocabulary and spelling enhanced through study of analogies.

Mathematics

(5 block hours/week)

Establishing routines; everyday uses of numbers; visual and number patterns; thermometer, linear measure and clock; introducing to fact power, geometry and attributes; mental arithmetic, money and fraction. Numeration and place value

Routines and assessments, addition, subtraction facts, place value, money and time, 3D and 2D shapes, review and extension of whole no. operations, patterns and rules; fractions, measurements, decimals and place vaues

Adding and subtracting whole numbers linear measures, multiplication and division, place value in whole number and decimals, geometry and probability, fractions and measurements; decimals and place values

Naming and constructing geometric figures; using number and organizing data, multiplication and division, number sentences and algebra; decimals and their uses, map reference frames measure of angle; fractions and uses change and probability, estimation and computining , reflectoins and symmetry, percents, perimeter and area.

Number theory, estimation and calculation. Fractions, decimals and percents; collecting and working with data Division, ratios and expotential notation; coordinates, areas, circles, volume. Algebra concepts and skills.

Science

(5 block hours/week)

Through hands on experience in science, students have opportunities to discover, question, reflect, experiment, explore and record. Fourth grade physical science includes study of the scientific method and various experiments. Fifth Grade explores the four realms of science: life science, physical science, earth science and human development. Reinforcement of science skills of inquiry, observation, inference, classification, interpretation and experimentation.

Arabic/Filipino

(5 block hours/week)

Th Arabic curriculum concentrates on developing proper skills for communication, comprehension and writing of Arabic. Culture geography and basic vocabulary are presented to increase student's conversational and grammatical skills. The fourth and fifth grade curriculum introduces more sophisticated grammar and conversational conventions, expanded vocabulary and a more in depth study of Islamic culture. Written and spoken Arabic are important parts of the upper primary grades studies. The Filipino curriculum will concentrate on language skills communication, comprehension and writing.

Social Studies

(5 block hours/week)

Over five years of primary education the students will first learn about their country, community and current events. Map skills will be taught along with an emphasis on Qatar's cultural diversity. Geography, continents and medieval studies with various traditions around the world will be emphasized from Grade 3. Grades 4 & 5 will concentrate on world cultures and the interrelationships that communication has brought to the world.

Technology

(1 class weekly)

Technology experience, in the classroom and in the computer lab are integrated into all curriculum areas. Technology becomes a tool that fosters creative and critical thinking, as well as the acquisition of the technology and content skills.

Visual Arts

Once per week students will be exposed to various media; projects will be integrated with class room curriculum; art history will be a focus of the yearly endeavors.

Music

Music will be taught once in a week for either vocal and/or instrument instruction, music appreciation and history. Videos and cassettes will be used to supplement the oral instruction.

Physical Education

(2 classes/week)

Development of hand, foot, eye skills; introducing to low level games.

continue work on throwing and kicking skills; introduction to intermediate level games.

Begin to develop leadership skills; develop the ability to maintain continuous physical fitness for specific time periods.

Continue work on leadership skills as well as team work. Physical activities include exercise to music, volleyball, basketball and track & field events
