Professional Development

Professional development promotes student learning because the number one factor in student achievement is a qualified teacher in every classroom. We know that good quality teaching ensures students are provided with every opportunity to excel and reach their highest personal levels.

At MIS, we support teachers improving their practice and being reflective practitioners both with respect to student achievement and their own learning. We know that staff require ongoing and updated professional development aligned to the mission, vision, and core values. Further, professional development must be an ongoing process, not an event. And, we know that the results should be monitored through formal and informal observation. Further, teachers should be asking, “What was my impact today? How can I have a greater impact?”

A variety of our staff lend their expert knowledge to providing professional development. In the past few years, here is a partial list of the professional development that staff have participated in and you can expect to see the utilization of these skills in the classroom:

  • Assessment for Learning
  • Interactive and Engaging Lessons
  • Common Core State Standards and Anchor Skills
  • Reading and Writing Skills for the Common Core
  • Performance Assessment Tasks
  • Cooperative Learning Techniques
  • Positive Learning Environment
  • Fundamental Five
  • Danielson Framework for Professional Practice
  • Understanding by Design
  • Differentiation
  • Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID)
  • Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
  • Creating Effective Assessments
  • Working with ESL Learners, Specific Strategies
  • Generation Amazing Methods (specific to PE teachers only) - staff working with colleagues on site to grow skills and methods

In addition, because staff are specialists in content areas or courses, additional opportunities are provided such as Arabic workshops sponsored by the Ministry of Education, astronomy workshops, or training to teach a specific course - such as AP Biology training.
