History of MIS

The Middle East International School (MIS)(Al Sharq al Awsat) is located in Doha, Qatar. The school is a college preparatory, private school for both boys and girls, together, which offers a quality, American education to a wide variety of international students that come to our school from all areas of Doha.

The KG1 through Grade 12 program combines the American education experience with progressive instruction using current best practice instructionally for all subjects including the required Arabic, Islamic Studies, and Qatar history courses.

The school was established in 1994 initiated by a group of expatriate teachers in order to meet the needs of Qatari and expatriate families. In its early years, MIS began as a kindergarten and primary school (Grades 1-6) located in rented facilities along the area of Al Muntazah. At that time, the school was known as the Middle East Primary School (MPS). It gradually expanded in that location to include students in all grade levels up to and including grade 12. Then, the school moved to a rental site for two years during the completion of the new school. The rental site was located in Al Thumama. Housed in a number of small villas, the school’s growth and programming needs created a need for a larger, single-campus. The school moved to Mesaimeer/Al Mamoura and onto the current KG1 through Grade 12 campus in September 2011. The state of the art facility has an overall capacity for about 900 KG1 through Grade 12 students.

The school is fully equipped in order to meet all operational needs. Fire safety equipment, appropriate exits, natural light, wide corridors, air conditioning, playground spaces, and appropriate classroom spaces are present in order to serve students. The current site also includes: a library, ICT labs, interactive white boards, a cafeteria, fully equipped science labs, indoor and outdoor play areas, a multi-purpose room, larger gymnasium, art rooms, a robotics room, full-sized-lighted soccer field, music rooms, special services rooms for English as Second Language instruction, a clinic staffed with a doctor and work areas including offices for our professional staff. These resources have a positive impact on the ability to provide a wide range of student learning opportunities and because of this wide range of opportunities, our students are able to be the center of our learning community.

The years that have passed since the school was established in 1994 have seen tremendous growth and change throughout Qatar. And, that growth and change has impacted both MIS and its community.

MIS now serves students from KG1 to grade 12. It has four sections which each have a principal:

  • Kindergarten (KG1/KG2)
  • Elementary (Grades 1 – 5)
  • Middle School (Grades 6 – 8)
  • High School (Grades 9 – 12)

In 2022-23 school year, the school will serve more than 850 students comprised of boys and girls from more than 50 nations.

For more than 25 years, MIS has provided a safe learning environment committed to the highest standard of education in a facility specifically designed to serve students. Our accreditations nationally (Qatar National School Accreditation - QNSA) and internationally (New England Association of School and Colleges - NEASC) demonstrate a level of excellence beyond other international schools.
